FTGN SUPPORT WEST AKYEM COCOA COOPERATIVE UNION & ASETENAPA COCOA COOPERATIVE SOCIETY TO ADVOCATE AGAINST THE DESTRUCTION OF THEIR FARM LANDS

Following a formal notification of Fair Trade Ghana Network by two member-cooperatives of their intentions to advocate against the destruction of their farmlands by illegal miners and developers two executive board members Mr. Emmanuel Nana Kwame Addo, the organiser, and Mr. Gideon Doe Bokomi, the vice president were assigned to assist with this advocacy action.

Their first stop was at the office of West Akyem Cocoa Cooperative at Asamankese in the Eastern region of Ghana where a quick meeting was held with their leadership after which the destroyed sites were visited to observe and record the level of destruction by the illegal mining activities. There were engagements with the various media houses present and a Press release was made where they jointly called on all stakeholders to come together to fight the issue of illegal mining.
After the event, the team travelled to meet with the leadership of Asetenapa Cocoa Cooperative Society at Suhum and following initial briefing they travelled further to the community where the farmlands of some farmers were being taken over by developers. A strategy to assist them to get back their lands was drawn and words of encouragement shared.
